World Water Day 2026

Where water flows, equality flourishes

Where water flows, equality grows

On 22 March, World Water Day highlights the essential role of water and sanitation for our societies. This year’s motto, “Where water flows, equality grows,” emphasizes that access to water and safe sanitation is far more than a technical matter: it is a fundamental requirement for health, safety, dignity, and equal living conditions.

More about the motto “Where water flows, equality grows”

The theme of World Water Day 2026 highlights the close link between water, sanitation and gender equality. It shows that the global water crisis affects everyone, but women and girls are disproportionately burdened—for example, through long distances to fetch water, resulting in lost education and life opportunities.

At the same time, the motto calls for a human rights–based approach, where water becomes a lever for social justice, climate protection, and genuine equal opportunities.

Shared responsibility

In Luxembourg, efficient water and wastewater systems ensure that wastewater is collected, treated, and safely returned to the natural water cycle. This infrastructure is a central part of public services and makes a significant contribution to quality of life and equal opportunities.
World Water Day 2026 and our campaign remind us: Water does not end at the drain. Those who act responsibly in everyday life help protect wastewater systems, preserve water resources, and secure fair conditions for all.
