Our national awareness campaign “Wat leeft?” received valuable media attention on 21 March, when the Luxembourg Times highlighted the growing challenges caused by flushing wet wipes and unused or expired medications into Luxembourg’s wastewater system. The coverage reinforces the urgency of the issues we have been raising with households across the country.

In the article, Danièle Mousel, Environmental Engineer at SIACH (Syndicat Intercommunal pour l’Assainissement du bassin de la Chiers) and a member of the campaign working group, provides deeper insight into the campaign’s objectives and the real-life impact of improper disposal habits.
The article echoes our core campaign messages:
- Wet wipes do not break down in water and accumulate in sewer networks, leading to blockages and costly interventions.
- Medication residues entering waterways make wastewater treatment more complex and significantly increase operational costs.
- Everyday habits at home have real consequences—for wastewater operators, treatment facilities, and ultimately, public spending.
This national media coverage strengthens the importance of our ongoing work to promote responsible flushing practices and brings broader visibility to the challenges wastewater professionals face throughout the country.

Personally, I’m always a bit tormented in films or series when people want to kick their addiction and flush the drugs down the toilet at a dramatic moment.
— Danièle Mousel, Environmental Engineer at SIACH
