Sustainable energy from sewage sludge – a tangible contribution to climate protection
Earth Day, celebrated every year on 22 April, is an international dayof awareness and action that highlights the importance of protecting our planet. Since its inception in 1970, the day has aimed to raise awareness of environmental and climate issues and to encourage the implementation of sustainable solutions in everyday life as well as in public infrastructure.

Wastewater plays an important role as a local and readily accessible source of sustainable energy, particularly through the use of sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plants. Wastewater is often associated exclusively with treatment processes. Yet it holds considerable potential that can be harnessed within the framework of a sustainable circular economy. The treatment process in wastewater treatment plants produces sewage sludge, a by-product with a high organic content that can be used to generate energy.
The anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge in special digesters produces biogas, a renewable energy source. This biogas can be converted into electricity and heat and is often used directly to power the wastewater treatment plant itself. This reduces the plant’s external energy requirements while helping to cut CO₂ emissions.
The use of energy from sewage sludge demonstrates how sustainable development can be put into practice. What was once regarded mainly as waste is now becoming a valuable resource. This approach is in line with the fundamental principle of the circular economy, which aims to keep materials and resources in circulation for as long as possible.
