In a separate sewer system, rainwater and surface runoff are collected separately from wastewater. Through storm drains and stormwater sewers, the water flows directly into a stream or via a sewer.
Storm drains allow rainwater to drain from public roads, pavements and other paved surfaces. This function is essential to prevent water from accumulating on roads and to reduce the risk of flooding.
However, after construction works, materials such as concrete, sand or insulation materials can sometimes enter and block storm drains. When these drains become blocked, they can no longer perform their drainage function properly, preventing rainwater from flowing away as intended. As a result, water can accumulate and overflow into residential areas, potentially causing flooding and damage to private property.

Fallen leaves can also block storm drains and obstruct the flow of rainwater.
For this reason, storm drains must never be used to dispose of or deposit construction materials, waste or other substances. They must be kept clear at all times to ensure that rainwater can drain away freely.
