Ronny Diederich (SIDEN) and Danièle Mousel (SIACH) were guests on RTL Lëtzebuerg, where they presented the current “Wat leeft?” campaign, as well as how our everyday habits affect the country’s sewer networks and wastewater treatment plants
The report illustrates which substances belong in the toilet or sink – and which do not. As a general rule: only human waste and regular toilet paper should be flushed down the toilet. Neither the toilet nor the sink is a trash bin!
Many items that still frequently end up there – such as wet wipes, cotton buds, tampons, food leftovers, fats, medicines, chemicals, or plastic – do not belong in the sewage system. They can clog pipes, make wastewater treatment more difficult, and cause high costs. In addition, they harm the environment, as treatment plants are not designed to fully remove such substances.
As the population continues to grow and more products are disposed of, there has been an increasing number of blockages in sewer systems and improperly discarded waste in recent years. The goal of the campaign is therefore to inform and raise public awareness about the importance of wastewater management in Luxembourg’s environmental protection – and at the same time show how water quality can already be improved through simple everyday actions.
